In January 2023, longtime friends and experienced early childhood educators Juniper Dwight and Cathy Smith embraced the opportunity to establish Island View Preschool.
Nestled in the historic Ebbetts Hall building in the Riviera Business Park, the school embodies their shared vision and unwavering dedication to providing high-quality childcare in the Santa Barbara community.

Cathy has over 35 years of expertise in early childhood education, specializing in Montessori, Reggio Emilia, and Outdoor Classroom methodologies. Her educational journey began at Sunrise Montessori School, when her son Jesse was 2. then Cathy founded One World Life Homeschool in 1989 and later joined Montessori Center School, and opened a second home preschool, Loma Feliz, when her daughter was 3, where she instinctively embraced creative, holistic, nature based education methods. Cathy has her BA from UCSB in combined social sciences, Montessori toddler training and over 19 years of Reggio Emilia training, while teaching in 2 quality Reggio philosophy based preschools in Santa Barbara. She is also a certified Outdoor Classroom specialist.
As Head of School, Cathy is responsible for overseeing curriculum development and staff training, ensuring alignment with the school’s ethos. She has initiated numerous community outreach programs that connect students with local environmental projects, enriching their learning experience through real-world applications.
Cathy is the proud mother of two children who both attended Montessori schools and her own home schools. Her eldest, Jesse, is the Director of Land Stewardship at White Buffalo Land Trust, focusing on regenerative agriculture. Her daughter, Makeda, is an Assistant Professor of Organic Chemistry at Columbia University, specializing in complex chemical systems. Cathy’s experiences as a Montessori parent have profoundly shaped her educational philosophy, having seen firsthand the impact of a nurturing education on producing community leaders and innovators.
Cathy is also an enthusiastic gardener and beachgoer. Growing up on a ranch and in Santa Barbara since her early teens,—she has a deep appreciation for nature. This connection not only enriches her personal life but also enhances the preschool’s curriculum, bringing real-world environmental learning into the classroom setting.
Juniper Dwight is proud to be the Executive Director of Island View Preschool. Juniper has been in the classroom working as a Lead Montessori Directress for 3- 6 year olds ever since receiving her AMI Montessori Diploma in 2003. She began her teaching career at Santa Barbara Montessori School where she also ran a successful art and garden program for ages 2-14 years old, was the Admissions Director, After School Coordinator, Parent Educator and Parent Liaison. Juniper has owned and operated a Large Family Home Daycare, taught homeschool groups, run summer camps for Preschool -6th grade and provided reading remediation. In 2022 Juniper opened Manzanita Montessori School in Ojai, California where she is currently the Head Of School, Program Director and Lead Preschool and Kindergarten teacher!
At Island View Preschool, Juniper works directly with Cathy Smith to keep the vision of the school alive, train staff and maintain the school’s policies to best serve the School’s students, staff and families. Juniper’s role also has her working closely with CFO Maida Smith and other members of the board to oversee the school’s fiscal health.
Juniper has two grown daughters who are, hands down, the greatest accomplishment of her life and three amazing granddaughters. Juniper delightfully offers as much time as life allows to being with her family.
When she can, Juniper backpacks into the local backcountry which fulfills her love of the natural world. She is most always seeking a creative outlet, be it playing the guitar or fiddle, beading, sewing or playing with natural dyes. Juniper grew up in a unique setting in the Santa Barbara foothills filled with animals, music and community. She feels her childhood has had a deep and positive influence on her love of the natural world and her relationships with creativity, music and the joy of learning.
